나는 라이프모델로 활동하고 있으며 동시에 라이프모델을 고용해 드로잉 수업도 진행하고 있다. 직접 현장에서 모델로 참여해 본 경험과, 교육자로서 모델의 노동 환경을 관리해 본 경험이 겹쳐 있어, 기사 속 문제 상황이 단순한 외부 사례가 아니라 현실적으로 와닿았다. 피렌체 미술아카데미 모델들의 장시간 포즈, 짧은 휴식, 보험이나 병가 등 기본 노동권 부재 문제는, 실제 한국과 해외 누드예술 현장에서 모델들이 겪는 어려움과 많은 공통점을 가진다.
국제적으로는 라이프모델의 근로 환경과 전문성을 보장하는 체계가 비교적 잘 마련되어 있다. 유럽, 미국, 일본, 호주 등에서는 장시간 포즈는 경력 모델에게 맡기고, 신입 모델은 단시간 포즈를 통해 경험을 쌓도록 설계한다. 시급도 경력과 전문성을 반영해 차등 지급되며, 근로계약서, 보험, 유급휴가 등 기본 노동권이 보장된다. 수업 구성 역시 모델의 피로를 최소화할 수 있게 시간을 한다. 해외에는 라이프모델 전문 교육 기관과 에이전시도 있어 모델들이 안전하게 근무하고 전문성을 쌓을 수 있도록 지원한다. 에이전시는 근로 조건, 수업 배치, 보험과 계약 관리 등 다양한 지원을 제공해 안정적인 활동 환경을 보장한다. 다만 시급은 우리나라와 비슷하거나 조금 낮은 경우가 많았는데 대신에 수업 시수가 많아 월급으로 따지면 훨씬 안정적으로 일을 할 수 있는 환경이다.
반면에 한국에서는 아직 체계적인 계약과 교육·에이전시 시스템이 부족하다. 우리나라의 누드예술, 특히 라이프드로잉은 역사가 짧기도 하고 그동안 작가들의 편의에 맞추어 운영이 되어오다보니 모델들의 기본적인 인권은 전혀 개선되고 있지 않다. 대부분 모델이 구두 합의나 단순 수업 단가로 근무하며, 신입과 경력 모델 구분 없이 동일 시급을 받는다. 경력 모델은 시급 대비 노동 강도가 높아 장시간 포즈를 꺼리다보니 초보 모델들이 잘 모르고 무리하게 포즈를 하다가 부상을 당하는 경우도 굉장히 많다(당연히 산재는 없다). 성희롱이나 성추행 문제에 대한 대처도 여전히 미흡하며 심지어 에이전시에 소속된 모델들조차 안전과 권리가 충분히 보장되지 않는 실정이다. 더 큰 문제는 대학, 입시학원, 화실 등에서 라이프드로잉 수업을 자꾸 줄이고 있다는 점이다. 회화과나 애니과인데도 불구하고 라이프드로잉 수업을 4년 내내 한 번도 하지 않는 학교가 점점 늘어나고 있다. 세계적인 추세와 완전히 반대로 가고 있는 것이다.
한국에서는 라이프모델 전문 교육 기관과 에이전시가 거의 없기 때문에, 모델들은 현장에서 경험을 스스로 쌓아야 한다. 이 과정에서 몸을 잘 쓸 줄 모르는 작가들이 모델들에게 무리한 포즈를 요구하는 경우도 허다하고 모델대에 올려놓은 천은 20년 넘게 한 번도 빨지 않아서 피부병에 걸리는 모델들도 많다. 모델링에 대해 제대로 배운 적 없는 모델들은 이를 지적해야한다는 사실을 모른 채 원래 환경이 그런 것을 참는 것이라고 잘못된 인식을 갖게 되기도 했다. 따라서 향후 개선을 위해서는 전문 교육 기관 설립, 체계적 에이전시 운영, 노동 환경 개선, 사회적 인식 변화가 필요하다. 피렌체 모델들의 시위 사례는 한국 누드예술계에도 중요한 시사점을 제공하며, 단순히 시급이나 노동권 개선을 넘어, 모델이 안전하고 전문적으로 일할 수 있는 구조적 기반 마련의 필요성을 보여준다.
내가 운영하고 있는 미스릴공방은 이러한 구조적 환경적인 부분을 개선을 위해 모델링 환경은 언제나 청결하게 유지하고 있으며 시급도 국제 수준으로 봐도 가장 높게 책정하고 있고 좋은 모델 분들에게는 인센티브도 드리고 있다. 그러나 우리가 에이전시는 아니기 때문에 모델 교육이나 계약관계에 대한 개선에는 힘을 미치지 못한다는 점은 언제나 아쉽다. 현재 운영하는 라이프드로잉 수업이 어느정도 자리를 잡고나면 모델링 교육과정, 표준계약관계에 대해 더 공부하여 시스템을 만들어보려고 한다.
Recently, life models at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts in Italy have demanded improvements in their working conditions and announced plans for legal action and public protests. The models face long, static poses exceeding eight hours a day with only short breaks, leading to significant physical and mental fatigue. Basic labor rights, such as insurance, paid leave, and sick days, are not guaranteed. Even senior models with over 30 years of experience are excluded from permanent contracts, highlighting a problematic employment structure that does not reflect experience and expertise. In the past, Florence models have staged protests over low pay and insecure contracts, and currently, the ABC union is involved in seeking a resolution.
I was particularly drawn to this article because I work as a life model myself and also hire life models for drawing classes. My direct experience as a model and my role as an educator managing the working conditions of models make this issue feel highly relevant and tangible. The long working hours, short breaks, and lack of basic labor protections at the Florence Academy reflect challenges that models face both in Korea and internationally.
Internationally, working conditions and professional recognition for life models are comparatively well established. In Europe, the U.S., Japan, and Australia, long poses are usually assigned to experienced models, while beginners gain experience through shorter poses. Wages are typically differentiated based on experience and expertise, and basic labor protections—including contracts, insurance, and paid leave—are provided. Class structures are designed to minimize fatigue, with scheduled breaks between poses. Many countries also have specialized institutions and agencies for life models, which help ensure safe working conditions and professional development. Agencies often support models by managing contracts, class assignments, insurance, and other employment conditions. Although hourly wages can be similar or slightly lower than in Korea, the greater number of class hours allows for more stable monthly income.
In contrast, Korea still lacks systematic contracts, training programs, and agency support. Life drawing as an art practice has a relatively short history in Korea, and classes have traditionally been operated according to the convenience of artists, with minimal attention to the basic rights of models. Most models work under verbal agreements or simple class-based rates, with no differentiation between beginners and experienced models. Experienced models often avoid long poses because the labor intensity is too high relative to pay, while beginners, unaware of proper protocols, may overexert themselves and sustain injuries. Workplace protections, including occupational accident coverage, are essentially nonexistent. Issues such as sexual harassment or assault are still inadequately addressed, and even models affiliated with agencies are not fully guaranteed safety or rights. Another concern is the reduction of life drawing classes in universities, preparatory schools, and studios; some programs no longer offer any life drawing throughout the full four years of study, which runs counter to global trends.
Because Korea has few specialized institutions or agencies for life models, models must gain experience independently. This can lead to unsafe conditions, such as being asked to perform challenging poses by artists who lack knowledge of proper posing techniques, or using worn-out materials like canvases and sheets that haven’t been cleaned for decades, causing skin issues. Models without formal training may not recognize these conditions as problematic and may wrongly assume that enduring such environments is standard. Therefore, improvements are urgently needed in establishing professional training programs, structured agencies, better labor conditions, and increased social awareness. The protests by Florence models provide an important reference point for the Korean nude art community, highlighting the need to create structural systems that allow models to work safely and professionally, beyond simply adjusting wages or labor rights.
At Mithril Studio, where I operate, we strive to address these structural and environmental issues. Our life drawing sessions are maintained in a clean and safe environment, we pay hourly wages among the highest internationally, and we provide incentives for outstanding models. However, as we are not an agency, we cannot directly influence model training or contractual frameworks. Once our current life drawing sessions are well-established, I plan to further study model training programs and standardized contract systems to develop a more formalized structure for the field.
